Let the IES Major Help You Realize
Your Potential to Teach!

If I’m already a Liberal Studies major, will I have to switch to IES?

NO.  It will be your choice.  If you are a junior or senior you will most likely finish your current program because the new major will not be available in time.  If you are a freshman or a sophomore, you should explore the new IES major as an exciting new option. We will help you tailor your program to take the best advantage of what you have already done and the offerings in the new major.

Can I become an elementary teacher?

YES.  Successful completion of the IES major and minors in core content areas ensure that you are well prepared to teach what elementary students needs to know and take the required California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET). Also, if eligible, students may apply with CES to begin taking credential courses beginning in their junior year. See an advisor for more details.

Can I become a high school teacher?

YES.  You may either double major in IES and the content area which you would like to teach or you can complete the IES minor and major in the content area. Students interested in secondary credential courses may also apply to begin taking credential courses during their junior year. The IES advisors will develop and organize your academic plan so that you can effectively do both.

For what other career will IES prepare me?

MANY.  There are teachers throughout our communities!  Teachers in business, and teachers in human services provide staff training and professional development.  The arts community uses teachers in museums and studios to teach music, history, dance, and other arts. If you are interested in community college teaching, the IES major would provide a strong foundation for that career path. Many graduates go abroad to teach or participate in a variety of international programs as teachers of many subjects, including languages.  As an IES major, you will explore these subjects and more in your coursework and field experiences.

When can I apply to the IES Major?

If you are a prospective student, you may apply for the IES major at the same time you are applying to attend Chapman University. If you are a current student, the IES major is an “open” major so you may declare it any time at the Registrar’s Office.

Will I be able to complete the degree in four years?

YES.  The IES major is very flexible and offers many pathways.  All of them allow you to finish in four years.  Our advising will ensure your timely completion of the program.

Will I have field experiences both locally and abroad?

YES. Even at the early stages of the program, you will enjoy field experiences in a variety of educational environments throughout the community.  We have also designed the program so most students will have the option of a semester abroad.
