Chapman University's Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) boasts a 30-year history of producing hundreds of graduates who are successfully employed locally and nationally at the professional, collegiate, and secondary school levels as athletic trainers and educators. Many of our graduates have also continued their education in complementary professions.

Combining comprehensive academic coursework with clinical hands-on experiences, our program prepares students for careers and/or graduate studies in a variety of fields, including:

  • Athletic training
  • Physical or occupational therapy
  • Physician assistant or medical school
  • Nursing/Nurse practitioner
  • Healthcare and sports/fitness administration

Chapman's ATEP employs a competency-based, medical education model and was awarded a 10-year re-accredition in August 2009 by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).

ATEP Celebrates 10-year Re-accreditation

Program's Past, Present, and Future Highlighted

On November 18 the ATEP hosted a special event to celebrate the past, present and future of our program.

Faculty, staff, and students were joined by Chapman President Jim Doti, College of Educational Studies Dean Donald Cardinal, and more than 40 program alumni to celebrate the ATEP’s recent 10-year re-accreditation. Alumni were recognized for their achievements during the unveiling of the Monte Smith Wall of Fame. Alumni provided career and networking advice to current AT students.

Additionally, the founder of Chapman's ATEP, Monte Smith, was honored with an endowment in his name to support student education. Monte’s daughter, Vana Smith Surmanian, shared memories of Monte’s pioneering days at Chapman and remarked that her father is very proud of the program's tremendous growth and achievements. The event raised more than $3,500 for the fund.
