In 2004, Chapman crew entered a new era with the opening of the Robert and Marie Gray Rowing Center. The boathouse is located in scenic Newport Harbor, just twenty minutes from campus. Newport Harbor is a beautiful rowing venue. With 6 miles of protected water, temperate climate, Newport is the perfect place to row and train. In fact, it is a popular training site for international crews during the winter months.
The Robert and Marie Gray Rowing Center is a two-bay boathouse with a 2,000 square foot workout space above the bays. The balcony looks out over Newport Harbor at about the 1100-meter mark of our 2000-meter regatta course.
Chapman University strongly supports its rowing program and looks forward to continued growth and success. The program is being built from the ground up. Until the opening of the Gray Rowing Center, the crew at Chapman was homeless. Now the university has a first class boathouse and workout facility on a perfect body of water for rowing.
