FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PANTHERS EARN TOP-10 PRESEASON RANKING…AND ALREADY CLIMBING

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women’s water polo team began the preseason ranked No. 7 in Division III by the Collegiate Water Polo Association. One week later, the Panthers have climbed to No. 6 – their highest preseason ranking ever.

Chapman finished the 2006 season 16-20 and on the outside looking in at a spot in the Collegiate III Championships. The Panthers return defensive centerpiece senior Constance McMorris in goal, as well as sophomore utility player Jennifer Manship, with hopes of returning to the Collegiate III playoffs as in 2005.

Manship was the offensive surprise last season, with a late-season surge that landed her with 36 goals and 15 assists. She’ll be asked to absorb more of the goal-scoring duties this year with the loss of Chapman’s top three scorers from 2006. Meanwhile, McMorris set a school record a year ago with 250 blocks in 36 games as a junior goalie.

The Panthers’ schedule may be their toughest yet and features five home games, plus the Chapman Tournament to open the season Feb. 24-25. Chapman will go on the road to face No. 3 Claremont and No. 2 Pomona-Pitzer in March, all leading up to a potential berth in the Western Water Polo Association championships at the end of April.
