OJAI, Calif. – Chapman University’s top singles players, junior Clifford Yook and freshman Liz Lewis, each reached the Round of 16 in their respective brackets at this weekend’s 108th Ojai Valley Tournament and will await potential selections into the NCAA Division III championships next month. Yook, who earned a first-round bye in the Division III singles division on Friday, defeated University of Redlands’ Chris Trippel in the second round that afternoon, 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the Round of 16 on Saturday. In that match, No. 4 seeded Yook was upset by Max Liberty-Point from U.C. Santa Cruz in three sets, 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 to fall to 19-5 overall this season in singles play. Yook and doubles partner Leland Buttle were eliminated in the first round of the Division III doubles tournament 8-5 to Liberty-Point and his doubles partner from Santa Cruz. On Thursday, Chapman freshmen Lewis and Kelley Fox enjoyed wins in their first matches of the Independent Colleges women’s singles bracket. Fox’s first round win over Concordia’s Cristina Paiva, 7-6, 6-3 preceded a second round loss to U.C. Santa Cruz’s Jessica Ruth. Meanwhile, after a first round bye, Lewis defeated Paige Sumida from Redlands, 6-2, 6-3, but then fell to No. 7 seed Amanda Varela from Concordia in the Round of 16. Lewis improved to 19-5 overall in singles play, while Fox finished the season 16-7. Lewis and Fox also reached the Round of 16 in the Independent Colleges doubles tournament with a first round victory over a team from Grand Canyon University (Ariz.), 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 improving their doubles record to 14-8 this season. The NCAA Division III women’s championships will take place at Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.), while the men’s championships will be hosted by Bates College (Maine). Both tournaments will take place May 13-18.
