ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women’s soccer team opened their season with a scoreless, double-overtime tie against Whitman College at Wilson Field on Saturday evening. The Panthers, who boasted a 9-2 record at home in 2006, received tough defense and strong goalkeeping to post their first shutout of the season. Junior GK Madison Coffin earned the shutout, making five saves in 110 minutes of play, including two big saves in overtime. Coffin led the Panthers with three shutouts and a 0.79 goals-against average in 2006. Chapman (0-0-1) out-shot the Missionaries 14-10 in the game, including a chance to win it when sophomore F Samantha Kountz-Edwards fired a shot on goal in the first overtime period. However, Whitman goalkeeper Courtney Porter came up with the save. Porter finished the game with three saves and earned her first shutout of the season for Whitman (0-0-1). The Panthers will host the opening game of a men’s/women’s doubleheader against Vanguard University on Monday at 5 p.m. The Chapman men will face Vanguard at 7 p.m. Game stats available online: |
