CHAPMAN’S STREAKING AGAIN; WINS EIGHTH STRAIGHT

ORANGE, Calif. – We’ve seen this before not long ago. The Chapman University women’s basketball team won a school-record 17 consecutive games last season, including a first round playoff game, before the streak was snapped by the No. 2 team in the nation Howard Payne University (Texas).

This year’s Panthers are back at it. After a season-opening loss to (who else?) Howard Payne, Chapman has rattled off eight straight wins, including a 48-40 victory over visiting University of La Verne at Hutton Center on Thursday night. The game was a rematch of last year’s NCAA first round tournament game in which Chapman rallied from a late 18-point deficit and defeated the Leopards in overtime.

Thursday night’s contest was far less dramatic, but far more defensive. While Chapman (8-1) was held to its lowest point total of the season, it also held La Verne (3-2) to its lowest score. Neither team shot better than 35 percent from the field, but got solid rebounding from their inside players with Chapman out-rebounding La Verne 44-40.

For the Panthers, who also won their 19th consecutive game at home, sophomore G Linda Ly scored a game-high 14 points with six rebounds and three assists. Junior G Nikki Hayman scored 11 points. Chapman won despite shooting 25 percent (4-for-16) from the free throw line.

La Verne was led by Marissa Raya’s 14 points. Trenecca Jones scored eight points and led all rebounders with 11. The loss snapped the Leopards’ three-game winning streak.
