STIFLING DEFENSE GIVES CHAPMAN A WIN IN HOME DEBUT

ORANGE, Calif. – For seven minutes in the second half, the Chapman University women’s basketball team held visiting Northland College (Wis.) scoreless, meanwhile the Panthers built a big lead en route to a 70-50 win Wednesday night in their home opener at the Hutton Sports Center

Using its full-court press, Chapman (3-2) took a quick 7-2 lead taking advantage of a few Northland turnovers. After a timeout, Northland (2-4) adjusted to the Panthers’ pressure at one point taking a 19-17 lead, the only LumberJill lead of the night. Chapman then took control with a 6-0 run and had a 33-25 lead at halftime.

The Panthers quickly added to their lead in the second half as they pressured Northland into several turnovers during a 7-0 run which built their lead to 15 at 40-25. Chapman limited the LumberJills to one field goal over the first 10 minutes of the second half as they pushed their lead to 28 points, Chapman’s largest lead with six minutes remaining in the game.

Junior G Linda Ly had a game-high 20 points for Chapman and senior F Adrijana Kerkez finished her night with 14 points and five rebounds. Senior G Lauren Kamiyama kept the defensive pressure on the Northland guards all night with a game-high six steals.

The LumberJills were led by junior G Lindsey Hamm with eight points and sophomore F Laura Fisher’s game-high 11 rebounds.

Chapman’s defense limited Northland to 40 percent shooting for the game while forcing 36 turnovers.
