FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
REDLANDS, Calif. – If the Panthers’ first two games are any indication, the neutral court could become an advantage this season. The Chapman University women’s basketball team rallied from a first-half deficit and pulled away in the second, defeating the University of Puget Sound (Wash.) 78-64 at the Redlands Tip-Off Tournament on Friday night. The Panthers improved to 2-0 in the first of eight neutral site games this season. Chapman (2-1) was led by senior G Nicole Hayman who scored 17 of her game-high 26 points in the second half, including 7-of-10 from the field. The Panthers shot over 60 percent (17-for-28) over the final 20 minutes to build on what had been a two-point lead at halftime. Hayman’s 26 points marked the second game in a row she has scored at least that many (27 vs. Chicago last Sunday). Junior G Linda Ly pitched in a season-high 16 points, making 10 of 11 free throws, and senior C Andrijana Kerkez earned her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Senior PG Lauren Kamiyama sank a trio of three-pointers – matching Hayman – and had seven assists for Chapman in the win. The Panthers trailed 27-18 late in the first, but ended the half on a 14-2 run to take their first lead of the game. Chapman then opened the second half on an 11-4 run and never looked back. Puget Sound (0-2) was led by Karen Chase who was one rebound shy of a double-double with 17 points and nine boards. Chapman will play another neutral-site affair on Saturday facing Trinity University (Texas) in the Tip-Off finale at 5:30 p.m.
