TACOMA, Wash. – The Chapman University women’s basketball season came to an end with a defeat by George Fox University (Ore.) 71-55 in the First Round of the NCAA Division III championship tournament. The Bruins will advance to play the University of Puget Sound at 7 p.m. on Saturday after the Loggers defeated the University of La Verne 74-58. The Panthers (24-4) were led by sophomore G Linda Ly with 18 points and two steals before fouling out late in the second half. Ly was joined by junior guards Nikki Hayman and Lauren Kamiyama, with 12 and 14 points respectively, as the only Panthers in double digits. Kamiyama nailed four three-pointers in the game. George Fox (24-4) opened the game with an early 11-4 lead. The Panthers responded with a 7-0 run over the next few minutes to tie up the game at 11. After the short spurt, the Bruins took the lead with a 10-0 run and never looked back. The Panthers never trailed by less than seven points the rest of the game. The game was an expected defensive battle between two of the top-25 defensive teams in the nation. The Bruins entered the contest with the No. 1-rated defense in Division III, giving up less than 45 points per game. Both teams shot less than 30-percent in the first half, leading to a 27-18 halftime score. The Bruins set a school record with their 24th victory of the season, and were led by senior F Katy Campbell with a career-high 28 points and 14 of 15 shooting from the free throw line. Senior G Jamie Hubka contributed 18 points, including eight points on two-for-five shooting from three-point range in the first half. Chapman's 12-game win streak was snapped with the first round loss. The Panthers tied their own school record with 24 victories this season.
