FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PANTHERS WIN 16TH STRAIGHT AND INDEPENDENTS CHAMPIONSHIP

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women’s basketball team hopes that it only has to wait a week to extend its school record 16-game winning streak, the fate of which now lay in the hands of the NCAA Division III tournament selection committee. The Panthers made their case for playoff inclusion on Saturday evening, defeating Colorado College 80-64 in the championship game of the Division III Independents Postseason Tournament and improving to 22-5 overall.

Top-seeded Chapman led from start to finish, opening the game with a 12-4 run and never looking back. The Panthers built a double-digit lead midway through the first half, and kept the Tigers from threatening. No. 2 Colorado College (10-14) cut the Chapman lead to six points with 6:10 remaining in the game, but didn’t get any closer.

Sophomore G Nicole Hayman led all scorers with 25 points, including a trio of three-pointers, and was named to the All-Tournament team. Freshman G Linda Ly added 13 points and six rebounds and was named tournament MVP.

Three Tigers reached double-digits in scoring led by G Melanie Auguste, who earned a double-double and nearly a triple-double with 15 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists. Auguste was named to the All-Tournament team. G Paige Whitney led Colorado College with 17 points.

The Panthers will await NCAA playoff selections scheduled for Sunday night at 9 p.m. (est). If chosen, Chapman won’t know where or against who until Monday morning at 9 a.m. Announcements will be made via the NCAA website: www.ncaasports.com.

No. 4 Nebraska Wesleyan 66, No. 3 U.C. Santa Cruz 57
The Prairie Wolves built a double-digit first half lead, holding U.C. Santa Cruz to just 18 points, on their way to the consolation game victory. G Megan Wells led Nebraska Wesleyan (5-22) with 12 points and senior G Samantha Porter earned three assists to become the school’s all-time leading passer with 331 career assists. The Wolves closed out the season with wins in three of their final five games. Ally Mahlman was named to the All-Tournament team.

For Santa Cruz (10-17), Kayleigh Calandri had a big game, scoring 29 points and five three-pointers, but it wasn’t enough to turn the Banana Slugs fortune. Calandri was named to the All-Tournament team as well.
