PANTHERS DEFEAT POMONA-PITZER, EQUAL WINNING STREAK RECORD

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women’s basketball team traveled to Claremont on Tuesday night to take on Pomona-Pitzer Colleges looking to etch its name into Chapman history. The Panthers’ resulting 64-47 win over the Sagehens gave them their 12th consecutive win and tied them for the school’s best Division III streak set in the 2001-02 season.

Chapman (18-5) struggled a bit in the first half, shooting just 34 percent from the field. Fortunately for the Panthers, the Sagehens didn’t fair much better shooting just 33 percent. The Panthers took a 25-22 lead into the locker rooms, but came out on fire in the second half, out-scoring the Sagehens by 14 over the final 20 minutes.

Once again sophomore G Nicole Hayman led all scorers with 27 points, including five three-pointers. Her performance raised her team-leading scoring average to 19.8 points. Freshman G Linda Ly added 10 points in only 18 minutes.  Sophomore G Rosa Lee led Pomona-Pitzer (4-15) with 12 points.

The Panthers’ last defeat came at the hands of Puget Sound (Wash.) on Dec. 17 at the Puget Sound Tournament. The winning streak has included wins against in-region rivals Colorado College, La Verne, Cal Lutheran and U.C. Santa Cruz.  Carol Jue’s squad will have to wait awhile to go for lucky win No. 13. Chapman will host Colorado College on Feb. 16 after a nine day layoff.
