ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women’s basketball team shot just 27 percent from the floor, but it was enough to beat visiting U.C. Santa Cruz 48-39 at Hutton Center on Sunday afternoon. The Panthers’ defense forced 27 turnovers and held the Slugs to just 17 second-half points to improve to 10-1 at home this season. Chapman (18-3) made just 17.6 percent of its first half field goal attempts and was limited to 13 points in the first half. U.C. Santa Cruz led 22-13 at halftime. However, a stronger offensive performance in the second half helped Chapman overcome that deficit. Senior G Amelia Perez was a key contributor off the bench, leading all scorers with 16 points – 10 coming in the second half – and adding six rebounds. Junior F Andrijana Kerkez scored seven points and led Chapman with 10 boards. Melissa Junge scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds for U.C. Santa Cruz (8-14).
