ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women’s basketball team’s bid for a perfect record at home in 2005-06 came to a crashing end with a 66-57 loss to visiting Hope International University on Tuesday night at Hutton Center. The Panthers struggled to put the ball in the hoop all night, shooting just 28.6 percent from the field, and closed out their home schedule with a 9-1 mark. The Panthers especially had a tough time at the free throw line, where a strong second half salvaged a 50 percent rate for the game. Chapman (13-8) missed its first 11 free throw attempts and shot 8.3 percent (1-for-12) in the first half. The Panthers also shot well-below their season average from beyond the three-point arc, making just 4-of-20 attempts. Despite all this, Chapman remained in the thick of the game for its entirety. Hope International (13-8) only pulled away in the end thanks to a big night from guard Jasmine Nault who scored a game-high 19 points. Center Sara Lycans-Roy also recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Royals, who won their third game in a row. For Chapman, freshman guard Ashley Shorts – making her second straight start – led the Panthers with 15 points and seven rebounds. The Panthers go on the road for their final eight games and will only return to the Hutton Center this season if they earn an at-large berth into the NCAA Division III tournament and are selected to host.
