PANTHERS BEAT LA SIERRA FOR 10TH CONSECUTIVE WIN

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women’s basketball team defeated visiting La Sierra University 85-66 at Hutton Center on Saturday night. But the victory was not all smooth sailing. The Panthers needed a 24-4 run during a six-minute stretch late in the first half to overcome a five-point deficit and put some distance between them and the Golden Eagles on their way to their 10th consecutive victory.

In the middle of the Chapman (16-5) rally was sophomore G Nicole Hayman who scored 24 of her career-high 38 points in the first half, including seven three-pointers in the game. Hayman was one rebound short of a double-double with nine. Freshman G Linda Ly scored in double figures for the fourth time in five games with a career-high 18 points. Meanwhile sophomore G Lauren Kamiyama earned her first double-double of the year with 15 points and 11 assists.

Chapman’s smothering defense once again forced a high amount of opponent turnovers. La Sierra (9-12) committed 33 turnovers, 11 of which came off Panther steals.

Thalia Benjamin led the Golden Eagles with 16 points and eight rebounds. Arrian Culjak finished with 11 points in the loss.

Chapman improved to 9-1 at home this season. The Panthers 10-game winning streak is their longest since the 2004-05 season when they also won 10 in a row. The longest winning streak in the school’s Division III history (since 1994) is 12 games, set in 2001-02.
