ROUND TWO GOES TO CHAPMAN IN POTENTIAL POSTSEASON MATCHUP

ORANGE, Calif. – In the second meeting of the season between the two teams, the red-hot Chapman University women’s basketball team made it 2-for-2 with a 68-65 victory over visiting University of La Verne at Hutton Center. The win was the Panthers’ sixth straight at home and ninth in a row overall. Tuesday night’s game may have been a postseason preview as La Verne also appears poised for a run at the NCAA tournament with an unbeaten record (4-0) in SCIAC play.

Chapman (15-5) had already beaten the Leopards by 17 points in La Verne last November, but Tuesday night’s win was in doubt until the final seconds. Trenecca Jones’ final three-point attempt to tie the game missed and the Panthers held on for the three-point victory. Jones finished with a game-high 34 points, including three three-pointers.

The Panthers built a double-digit lead early in the first half thanks to a big night from sophomore G Nicole Hayman, who finished with a team-high 29 points and eight rebounds. Hayman was also 4-for-5 from three-point range. Sophomore G Lauren Kamiyama also pitched in with 16 points and eight assists.

However, La Verne (11-4) chipped away at the Chapman lead, cutting it to three points several times in the closing minutes, but never got any closer. Marissa Raya finished with 12 points for the Leopards. The loss snapped La Verne’s four-game winning streak.
