FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ORANGE, Calif. – The flu-riddled Chapman University women’s basketball team defeated visiting U.C. Santa Cruz 75-53 at Hutton Sports Center on Saturday night, earning its ninth consecutive home victory. The Panthers, who had four women – including two starters – playing at less than 100 percent because of flu-like symptoms, have now won five of their past six games. Junior center Sarah Brands scored all 18 of her points in the first half to give Chapman (12-5) a double-digit lead early on. Freshman guard Ashley Shorts, in her first career start, scored a career-high 17 points and added three steals. The Panthers shot 54.5 percent from the field in the game, a season-high. The 20-plus point victory is Chapman’s second such win over U.C. Santa Cruz this season. Forward Megan Gaynor led all scorers with 19 points and added five rebounds for Santa Cruz (5-14). The Panthers will have over a week to get healthy. Chapman will not play again until Jan. 31 when it will host Hope International at 5 p.m. That game will be the home finale for the Panthers, who will put their 9-0 home record on the line one last time.
