ORANGE, Calif. – A strong first half by the Chapman University women’s basketball team had the Panthers eyeing what could have been their 23rd straight victory at home. However, visiting Wheaton College (Ill.) overcame a 15-point halftime deficit to beat Chapman 73-66 at Hutton Center on Thursday night to halt the Panthers’ school-record home winning streak at 22 games. Wheaton (7-3) opened the second half on a 14-0 run in the first three and a half minutes to nearly erase a 43-28 Chapman lead. Sarah Jones scored nine of her team-high 21 points during the stretch. With eight minutes remaining in the game Jones’s back-to-back baskets gave the Thunder its first lead at 56-53 and they never trailed again. Chapman (12-3) tied the score at 66 with 1:07 left in regulation, but Wheaton scored the game’s final seven points to close out the Panthers. The Thunder shot 60 percent from the field in the game, including three second-half three pointers. Jamie Jones scored 16 points and pulled down six rebounds for Wheaton. The Panthers built their first-half lead thanks to the play of junior G Nikki Hayman, who scored 19 of her game-high 28 points in the first half. Hayman’s 28 points also marked a season-high and included four three-pointers for Chapman. Junior G Lauren Kamiyama scored 11 points, including three three-pointers, and added five assists and six steals. Chapman’s last loss at home came on Nov. 22, 2006 in a 59-58 loss to Carleton College (Minn.).
