ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women’s volleyball team has seen about enough of Claremont. In the Panthers’ season-opener, they watched a two-games-to-one lead slip away and lost to the Athenas in five games. Ten days later, Claremont handed Chapman another loss at the Cal Lutheran Tournament. Then on Friday night the Panthers thought they were experiencing déjà vu. Chapman did not look sharp in the first game, but rebounded to win the next two. A late rally by Claremont in the fourth game evened the match 2-2 and forced a fifth and deciding game in which the Athenas built a 14-12 lead and were serving for game-point. However, a second timeout in a row by head coach Mary Cahill sparked a Panthers’ surge as they scored four straight points to come from behind finally beat Claremont. A service ace by sophomore OH Lyndsey Cargile fell untouched for the clincher. Chapman won 17-30, 30-27, 30-22, 30-32, 16-14 to remain a perfect 5-0 at Hutton Center this season. Junior MB Jill Felger had the single-best match of her career, recording a career-high 29 kills and adding three solo and five total blocks. It’s the third time this season Felger has tallied 20 or more kills in a match. Meanwhile, freshman setter Kat Kowalski set her own career-high with 61 assists for Chapman (10-7) which won its season-best fourth consecutive match. Cargile (14) and senior OH Nikkie Powers (12) also had double-digit kills. The win was even more important for the Panthers as it came against Claremont (9-8), which entered the night ranked No. 8 in the West Region. The Athenas were led by MB Camille Butts, who recorded a team-high 20 kills and three solo blocks. OH Lindsay Hull finished with 18 kills and 28 digs and setter Alex Harrison had 63 assists.
