SWIMMERS SHINE AT CHAMPIONSHIPS WEEKEND

BELMONT, Calif. – Chapman University sophomore swimmer Mike Reynolds set or helped set five school records and the Panthers’ women also had a strong showing at the Pacific Coast Swim Championships in Belmont last weekend. Reynolds set three individual records in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard and 200-yard backstrokes for Chapman.

Sophomore Edna Best led the Chapman women with two top-20 finishes, including 15th place in the 100-yard butterfly. Her time of 1:00.44 was just less than two seconds slower than her personal best in the event, which helped her qualify for the national championships in 2007. Best also placed 18th in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:18.74.

Freshman Julia Fish also earned a top-24 finish in one of her strongest events: the 200-yard backstroke. Fish’s time of 2:18.17 was good enough for 21st at the championships.

Reynolds’ record-breaking performance earned him a pair of 12th place finishes on the men’s side in both the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke. His time of 55.62 in the 100-back edged a seven-year old school record. The sophomore also placed 19th in the 50-yard freestyle sprint with a time of 22.08, a record held by Erik Sandvig since 1999.

Fellow sophomore Austin McElvaney also set a school record in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.21 and placed 14th in the event. McElvaney and Reynolds then joined in two additional school records set in the four-man 200-yard and 400-yard medley relay teams. In all, six new records were set by the men in Belmont.
