FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BELMONT, Calif. – Chapman University sophomore Edna Best placed first in her heat and finished with the eighth best time overall in the 100-yard butterfly at the Pacific Coast Swim Championships in Belmont this weekend. Her time of 58.54 qualifies her, in part, for the NCAA Division III Championships in Houston, Texas next month. Best rebounded from a disappointing preliminary in the event, where she was more than a second slower, to come within .61 seconds of the Chapman record set in 2004. She qualified for the ‘B cut’ for the national championships, meaning she’ll be invited to compete if there are spots open after ‘A cut’ individuals and teams are chosen. She becomes just the second swimmer in Chapman history to qualify for the championships. It was also a good weekend for freshman teammate Lynnette Fukuda, who placed 12th overall in the 100-yard backstroke finals with a time of 1:00.60, just .26 seconds off the school record. Senior Sean Cooney set a new men’s record with a time of 55.60 in the 100-yard butterfly, breaking his own mark by shaving .09 seconds off his time at last year’s championships. Cooney also placed 15th overall in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:05.57.
