ORANGE, Calif. – Fresh off its fourth consecutive NCAA playoff appearance, the Chapman University softball team had six players named to the Association of Division III Independents All-Independent softball team on Wednesday, including sophomore right-hander Jennifer Winford who earned Independent Pitcher of the Year for 2006. Also, Chapman head coach Janet Lloyd earned Independent Coach of the Year for the second year in a row. Winford, who was awarded Rookie of the Year in 2005 by the Association, posted a 12-5 record and led the team with 65 strikeouts and a .210 opponent batting average against. The right-hander’s 12 complete games and six shutouts also led Chapman and her 1.46 ERA ranked second on the team. Senior third baseman Kim Sanders joined Winford on the All-Independent first team after leading the team in batting (.375), doubles (16), home runs (9) and RBI (29). It was her second honor. Outfielder Kailee Roeser earned second team honors for Chapman. The senior batted .346 with seven doubles and led the team with 26 runs scored. Senior right-hander Marissa Becerra (6-2, 1.00, 7 CG), senior shortstop Jill Jeranko (.314, 5 HR, 18 RBI) and freshman outfielder Erin Dudzinski (.311, 11 2B, 8 SB) each earned honorable mention. The Association of Division III Independents consists of 19 Division III independent institutions that have joined together to recognize student-athletes at independent institutions, and to provide exempted postseason championship competition in seven sports in 2005-06. The Association recognizes outstanding athletic achievements of its student-athletes on a weekly, monthly and annual basis. The Association also provides statistical services for its members in seven sports, and has announced All-Independent teams at the conclusion of eight other sports this year. Chapman is a charter member of the Association.
