MARATHON WOMEN: CHAPMAN OUTLASTS TRINITY IN 14; BUT FALLS TO LOUISIANA

PINEVILLE, La. –  Senior RHP Maggie Wilder struck out 12 batters in 14 shutout innings and sophomore OF Erin Dudzinski doubled in the game-winning run in the top of the 14th inning as the Chapman University softball team defeated Trinity University (Texas) 1-0 to advance to the winner’s bracket at the NCAA Division III West Region playoffs on Thursday.

In the nightcap, No. 1 seed and tournament host Louisiana College pounded 15 hits in five innings to defeat the Panthers 11-3 at Coca-Cola Field. Chapman (29-12) will face Mississippi College in an elimination game on Friday at 2 p.m. (cdt).

Game 1: Chapman 1, Trinity 0 (14 innings)
Wilder, a three-time All-West Region selection, scattered seven hits to improve to 15-4 this season. The senior pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning and left runners in scoring position in the 12th and 13th innings. With a one-run cushion in the 14th, the right-hander retired the side in order to close out the win.

Chapman had its own opportunities to break the scoreless tie, getting runners to second and third with one out in both the seventh and eighth innings, but failing to score. In the 14th, the Panthers got a one-out double from freshman IF SheaLynn Slover and a walk by senior OF Sandra Burns. Dudzinski then followed with a double to left-center plating Slover with the go-ahead run.

The Panthers had 10 hits in the game, led by Slover, who was 2-for-6. Juniors Amanda Campbell and Jennifer Winford also had two hits each, including a double.

Game 2: Louisiana College 11, Chapman 3
It took Chapman 14 innings to score their first run of the tournament, but less than an inning to score its second. The Panthers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, thanks to a strikeout-wild pitch that plated two runs (including an errant throw). Slover then continued her hot streak by singling in a third run.

However, it was all Louisiana from there. The Wildcats scored five times in the second inning, including a pair of solo home runs off Chapman starting pitcher Ally Waffle. Four different Panther pitchers couldn’t slow Louisiana College down as it scored a run in each of the third and fourth innings, and then four more in the fifth to end the game with a run-rule.

Mississippi College lost to Redlands 8-3 at Coca-Cola Field on Thursday. The Choctaws are the No. 3 seed in the tournament. The game will be broadcast live via the Mississippi College Sports Network: http://www.gochoctaws.com/Sports/admin/2006/Broadcast.asp. The winner will play again at 6 p.m., while the losing team is eliminated.
