LONG BALLS PROVIDE DIFFERENCES IN CHAPMAN SWEEP

ORANGE, Calif. –  The Chapman University softball team completed a sweep of visiting Vanguard University, defeating the Lions 7-0 and 3-2 in a non-conference doubleheader at Hart Park on Tuesday afternoon. The Panthers hit a three-run home run in each game, which proved to be the difference makers in both wins. Chapman matched its season-best winning streak at six games.

Game 1: Chapman 7, Vanguard 0
The Panthers avenged an early-season no-hitter against Lions’ pitcher Jennifer Olvera, beating the right-hander with a three-run home run from junior OF Erin Dudzinski in the third inning. The homer was the only hit off of Olvera until the sixth inning when Dudzinski struck again with a leadoff single that sparked a four-run rally and knocked the Vanguard pitcher out of the game. Seniors Catherine Hall and Amanda Campbell had RBI singles during the outburst and Jennifer Winford doubled in a run for Chapman.

Sophomore RHP Katie Finley threw her second three-hit shutout in as many weeks, striking out six batters to improve to 10-4 overall. Finley has won nine of her last 10 decisions.

Game 2: Chapman 3, Vanguard 2
This time Hall provided the power for Chapman (26-8); her third inning three-run blast erasing a 2-0 deficit and giving the Panthers all they would need to pull off the doubleheader sweep. Chapman had just five hits in the game, but stole four bases against the Lions. Campbell was 1-for-2 with a walk for the Panthers, as well.

Winford, the senior right-hander, recovered from a rough first inning where she allowed a pair of unearned runs the throw a four-hit complete game against Vanguard (30-16). She had retired 14 batters in a row until a leadoff single in the seventh and improved to 14-4 this season.
