CHAPMAN, VANGUARD SETTLE FOR SOFTBALL DOUBLEHEADER SPLIT

ORANGE, Calif. – The No. 4 Chapman University women’s softball team and visiting Vanguard University split a pair of games on Friday night at Hart Park. Chapman (23-8) won the first game 2-0 on the strength of a six-hit shutout by sophomore right-hander Jennifer Winford. Vanguard (19-20) rallied from a 1-0 deficit to win the second game 2-1 on a seventh inning home run by shortstop Rachel Bomgren.

Game 1: Chapman 2, Vanguard 0
Senior third baseman Kim Sanders snapped a scoreless tie with a solo home run in the fourth inning, her seventh of the season. The Panthers then capitalized on a pair of Vanguard errors in the sixth inning to score an insurance run. Winford held the Lions to just six hits and struck out four to improve to 11-4 this season. Freshman outfielder Erin Dudzinski had a pair of hits and scored a run for Chapman.

Game 2: Vanguard 2, Chapman 1
The Panthers again took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when sophomore Catherine Hall singled in senior Katherine Searing. With a pair of singles, Searing extended her hitting streak to seven games. The Lions battled back to tie the score in the fifth and then won it in the seventh on Bomgren’s homer. Melissa Benson and Jennifer Rynda each had three hits in the game for Vanguard. Chapman right-hander Marissa Becerra suffered her first loss of the season, falling to 5-1.
