ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University softball team rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat visiting Whitworth College (Wash.) 4-2 at Hart Park on Tuesday evening as part of the month-long Sun West Tournament. The Panthers received a gritty pitching performance from senior RHP Jennifer Winford to win their third straight and 15th out of their last 17 games. Chapman (20-6) plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth on consecutive hits by Kandy Francis, Vanessa Goncalves, Erin Dudzinski and Melanie Villarroel. Villarroel’s two-run double was the big blow in the inning and provided the Panthers with a 4-2 lead. Francis was 2-for-3 in the game with a run scored. Winford did the rest, although battling the effects of not pitching in a week, getting out of trouble in the first, third and fourth innings. The senior struck out six Pirates batters, allowed two earned runs and improved to 11-3 this season for Chapman. The Panthers improved to 14-2 in Sun West action and will conclude play in the tournament on Wednesday, facing Northwest Conference foes Linfield College (Ore.) and Willamette University (Ore.) beginning at 3:30 p.m.
