PANTHERS TRIPPED UP BY PACIFIC IN 7-4 LOSS
ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women’s softball team could not overcome a four-run fifth inning by visiting Pacific University (Ore.) and dropped its third game of the Sun West Tournament 7-4 on Saturday afternoon. The loss followed a narrow 2-1 victory over Tufts University (Mass.) earlier in the afternoon.
Game 1: Chapman 2, Tufts 1 The Panther bats came alive for one inning and one inning only with four hits including RBI singles by Denise Knight and Erin Dudzinski, giving Chapman a 2-0 lead in the third inning. It was all senior right-hander Marissa Becerra needed as she silenced Tufts, allowing five hits and just one unearned run to improve to 5-0 this season. Tufts’ right-hander Sarah Conroy didn’t allow a Chapman base runner in any of the other five innings she worked.
Game 2: Pacific 7, Chapman 4 The Boxers broke open a 1-1 tie with four runs in the fifth inning on four hits, an error and a wild pitch. The Panthers rallied in the sixth to cut the lead to 5-4 and loaded the bases with two outs, but couldn’t get any closer. Seniors Katherine Searing, Kailee Roeser and Meredith Cipolla all had a pair of hits for Chapman, which fell to 22-7 overall and 9-3 in tournament play.
