CHAPMAN PITCHING SHUTS DOWN TWO MORE OPPONENTS

ORANGE, Calif. –  The Chapman University softball team won two more games on Wednesday, defeating Wheaton College (Ill.) 9-1 and Haverford College (Pa.) 2-1 at Hart Park as part of the Sun West Tournament. In 13 innings, the Panthers’ pitching staff allowed just seven hits and one earned run en route to a pair of victories. Chapman (14-5) has now won nine of its past 10 games.

Game 1: Chapman 9, Wheaton 1
The Panthers scored five runs in the second inning, highlighted by RBI singles from junior OF Erin Dudzinski and senior IF Catherine Hall. Chapman then scored three times in the fifth to clinch the ‘run-rule’ victory. Dudzinski and sophomore OF Katie Finley were 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored each. Sophomore IF Melanie Villarroel had two hits as well, including a two-run double in the fifth.

Senior RHP Jennifer Winford allowed just three singles and one unearned run in five innings for her eighth win of the year. She is now 8-2 this season.

Game 2: Chapman 2, Haverford 1 (8 inn.)
Freshman OF Kara Rutkin’s RBI single in the top of the eighth inning plated junior IF Brittany Botterill with the game-winning run. That made a winner out of Finley, who eclipsed her career-high with 13 strikeouts and threw a four-hitter. The right-hander won her third consecutive game and improved to 4-3 this season. Finley struck out the side in the first and third innings.

Sophomore IF SheaLynn Slover led off the second inning with a solo home run for Chapman to even the score at one. Slover’s third HR of the year ties her for the team lead. Slover and Rutkin each had a pair of hits for the Panthers, who were limited to less than three runs for the first time in the last 11 games.
