ORANGE, Calif. – As if determined to return to the national rankings, the unranked Chapman University softball team scored six runs in the seventh inning to score a sound 8-2 victory over No. 4-ranked Ithaca College (N.Y.) in the Sun West Tournament at Hart Park on Tuesday afternoon. The Panthers snapped a 2-2 tie in the final inning by sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring six runs on seven hits to win going away. Senior RHP Jennifer Winford was the beneficiary of the late-inning outburst by the Panthers. Winford improved to 7-2 overall, throwing a complete-game four-hitter and striking out five Bombers. Winford was also 2-for-3 at the plate and her double started the seventh-inning rally. Chapman (12-5) totaled 14 hits in all, including a 3-for-4 performance from senior IF Catherine Hall who tripled and stole a base. Sophomores Melanie Villarroel and SheaLynn Slover each drove in a pair of runs for the Panthers, who improved to 6-1 in tournament play. The Panthers had dropped out of the top-25 in the first regular season poll of the year after being ranked No. 14 in the preseason edition. Chapman’s schedule doesn’t get any easier in the coming weeks as it will host the defending national champs No. 1 Linfield (Ore.), No. 10 St. Thomas (Minn.) and No. 22 Central (Iowa) as part of the Sun West Tournament.
