CHAPMAN OFFENSE KEEPS CAL STATE AT BAY

ORANGE, Calif. –  The Chapman University softball team wrapped up its first month of play a little early, but much like it started. The Panthers slugged their way to another doubleheader sweep, this time over visiting Cal State East Bay 7-1 and 9-2 at Hart Park on Sunday afternoon. Chapman had 27 hits in the two games and improved to 8-2 this season.

Game 1: Chapman 7, Cal State East Bay 1
Sophomore OF Erin Dudzinski went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two stolen bases to lead Chapman’s offensive attack. Junior SS Catherine Hall hit a two-run inside-the-park homer in the first inning to put the Panthers on the board; her fourth HR of the season. Freshman 1B Dani Brown also had a pair of hits and scored a run.

The Panthers got a fine pitching performance from senior RHP Maggie Wilder who limited the Pioneers to just six hits and struck out five. Wilder improved to 4-1 this season with a 0.84 earned run average.

For Cal State East Bay, 3B Katie DiStefano hit a solo home run in the seventh to breakup Wilder’s shutout bid.

Game 2: Chapman 9, Cal State East Bay 2
Chapman opened up a 3-2 game with a run in the fifth and five more in the sixth, while pounding out 17 hits in the game. The big blows in the five-run sixth came on back-to-back doubles from freshman RHP Vanessa Goncalves and Brown, which plated three runs. Junior DP Jennifer Winford went 4-for-4 with her first career home run – a solo shot to leadoff the third inning – and senior OF Sandra Burns had three hits, including a double and an RBI.

Leadoff OF Stephanie Chu had a pair of hits, including a two-run triple for Cal State East Bay, which fell to 1-5 this season.

Goncalves was solid in the circle for the Panthers, improving to 4-0 this year. The freshman scattered eight hits and two runs in her first complete game effort of the season. Chapman will be idle for two weeks before kicking off the Sun West Tournament with a tripleheader on March 4.
