FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

IT’S A ‘SUPER’ SUNDAY FOR CHAPMAN SOFTBALL

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University softball team began the season 4-0 by sweeping a doubleheader, 10-0 and 8-0, from visiting Whittier College on Sunday at Hart Park. Senior right-handers Marissa Becerra and Erin Bryant each threw two-hit complete game shutouts, while the Panthers’ bats provided plenty of run support.

Game 1: Chapman 10, Whittier 0
Chapman scored early and often in the first game of the doubleheader, plating three runs each in the first, second and fourth innings en route to a five-inning ‘run rule’ victory. Senior outfielder Kailee Roeser drove in four runs with a pair of singles. In four games this weekend Roeser was 5-for-9 with nine RBI to lead the team. Freshmen Erin Dudzinski and Kathleen Ramseyer each collected two hits and scored a run. The Panthers capitalized on seven walks

Becerra, who entered the game ranked fifth in Chapman history in career ERA and shutouts, improved on both numbers. She held the Poets to just two hits and struck out four batters to earn her 11th career shutout.

Game 2: Chapman 8, Whittier 0
Bryant, who missed all of last season with a knee injury, pitched in her first game since May 2004 and earned a complete game shutout. Sophomore outfielder Catherine Hall broke open a 1-0 game in the fourth with a two-run double. In the bottom of the sixth, Chapman again ended the game early with a four-run rally capped by a two-run single by junior outfielder Sandra Burns and a sacrifice fly by senior first baseman Meredith Cipolla. Cipolla has been issued six walks in 13 plate appearances this season. Dudzinski and Ramsmeyer again led the Panthers with two hits apiece.

Next up for the Panthers will be 2005 NAIA national runner-up Cal Baptist, in Riverside on Feb. 15. The Lancers are currently 2-0 after sweeping a doubleheader from Division II Cal State San Bernardino.
