BIG INNINGS GIVE CHAPMAN DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP OVER LA VERNE
ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University softball team looked like two-time defending regional champion on Saturday as it opened its season with two impressive wins over visiting University of La Verne an afternoon doubleheader at Hart Park. The Panthers had one big offensive inning in each game to complete their first doubleheader sweep of La Verne since 1997.
Game 1: Chapman 9, La Verne 1 Senior second baseman Katherine Searing put Chapman on the board and in the lead for good with a two-run home run in the fourth inning to erase an early one-run deficit. The Panthers poured it on in the bottom of the fifth inning, rolling a lucky seven and scoring seven runs to earn a ‘run-rule’ victory over the Leopards. Senior outfielder Kailee Roeser and sophomore third baseman Angela Guajardo each had two-run doubles in the inning to pace Chapman. Freshman outfielder Kathleen Ramseyer went 3-for-3 and scored a run in her collegiate debut.
Sophomore right-hander Jennifer Winford held La Verne to just three hits and a run over five innings to earn her first win of the year.
Game 2: Chapman 9, La Verne 4 Again the Chapman offense was slow to awaken, but in the bottom of the fifth inning, Roeser snapped a 1-1 tie with a two-run single up the middle. In the sixth, the Panthers broke it wide open with a six-run outburst capped by a grand slam from senior catcher Kim Sanders, her second hit of the game. Another freshman Erin Dudzinski made her debut with a pair of hits, including a double, and three runs scored. Junior right-hander Maggie Wilder struck out five batters for the complete game victory.
Kelley Silagyi had a pair of hits, including a two-run homer in the seventh, to aid La Verne, who out-hit the Panthers 11-9 in the second game.
