ORANGE, Calif. – Panthers’ junior Alex Mulé scored nine goals to lead the Chapman University men’s water polo team to a 15-6 victory over visiting University of La Verne in the inaugural event in the new Allred Aquatics Center on campus at Chapman. The Panthers – ranked No. 9 in Division III – jumped out to a 10-2 lead after three quarters and cruised to the victory in their 2008 season debut. Mulé, the national scoring leader the past two seasons, scored five of his nine goals in the first half, including two on penalty shots and another one with a 6-on-5 Chapman advantage. The Panthers scored six times in nine opportunities with a man advantage. Chapman’s (1-0) defense played a key role in the lopsided victory, forcing 16 turnovers on steals. Freshman Jake Ediger and junior Austin McElvaney each had five steals apiece. McElvaney added a pair of goals on offense, as well. Junior goalie Colin Gasper made seven blocks and allowed just two goals in the first three quarters of play before being relieved.
