FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CLAREMONT, Calif. – It may only be October, but the Chapman University men’s and women’s tennis teams were in action at Claremont last weekend for the NCAA Division III West Regional Fall Tournament. The Panthers had an impressive showing with both men’s and women’s No. 1 singles players reaching the semifinals before losing to the eventual tournament champs. Returning men’s singles standout Clifford Yook began the tournament ranked No. 8 in the West and won four matches to earn a spot in the semifinal round before falling to eventual champ Mikey Lim. In Yook’s quarterfinal round against Ben Hough, he rallied after losing the first set to win the next two 7-6 and 6-0. The junior won seven singles matches last spring and posted a 9-4 record in doubles. Freshman Liz Lewis threw herself a welcoming party while playing in her first collegiate tournament. The rookie, seeded No. 13, also rallied after losing the first set to win her quarterfinal match and advance to the semifinals. Lewis upset No. 5-seeded Whitney Waters in the Round of 16 in the midst of her three consecutive victories. Also on the women’s side, junior Roxanne Kaiden and freshman Amy Mass each climbed to the semifinals in two consolation brackets after getting knocked out of the main draw. Mass finished the tournament with a record of 3-2 in singles play. The tournament is the one and only tournament for Division III schools in the fall and will be the basis for preseason rankings to be released in February. Complete results available online: |
