CHU ADVANCES, THEN ELIMINATED FROM NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

FREDRICKSBURG, Va. – Two-time All-American tennis player Robert Chu won his opening round match at the NCAA Division III national championships, hosted by Mary Washington University on Saturday, but was later eliminated in the Round of 16, one step away from the quarterfinals.

Chu (22-7) defeated DePauw University’s Evan Webeler in the first round of the tournament, something he was unable to do when he reached the tournament in 2005. Chu battled back from a first set loss, 3-6, to win the second set 6-4 and then controlled the third and deciding set 6-0.

The senior then faced Middlebury College’s Brian Waldron and fell in straight sets 2-6, 2-6. Waldron eventually advanced to the championship finals – without losing a set – and finished runner up.

Chu was in good company by losing in the second round. All four remaining West Region participants lost in the Round of 16, including defending national champion Matt Seeberger of U.C. Santa Cruz.
