ORANGE, Calif. – Senior All-American Robert Chu and junior doubles partner Morgan Surfas played together just three times this season, but it didn’t take long for them to mesh. The duo advanced to the Division III West Region doubles quarterfinals at the 106th Annual Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament last weekend, where they lost to eventual champions Guillaume Schils and Lawrence Wang from Claremont, 8-4. Chu also advanced to the quarterfinals in Division III West Region singles bracket, losing to U.C. Santa Cruz’s Shane Templeman in straight sets. It was a battle of No. 4 (Chu) vs. No. 5 (Templeman) in the West Region, according to March rankings from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The quarterfinals loss was an improvement over Chu’s performance at Ojai in 2005 where he was eliminated in the round of 32. Templeman advanced to the finals before falling to Santa Cruz teammate and the region’s top-ranked singles player Matt Seeberger. Surfas also had good showing in singles play, advancing to the round of 32 and losing to Seeberger in three sets. Surfas won the first set 6-4, but dropped the next two. Surfas’s first round win also came in three sets where he defeated Claremont’s Evan Feldhausen, 6-0, 4-6, 6-3.
