ORANGE, Calif. – The much anticipated 108th Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament begins today in Ojai for both Chapman University’s men’s and women’s tennis teams. Chapman’s top players seek a strong showing at this weekend’s tournament with hopes of earning berths at the NCAA Division III championships. The tournament kicks off its four-day competition on Thursday with the Panthers’ freshman Kelley Fox taking on Concordia’s Cristina Paiva in the first round. Chapman’s top player, freshman Liz Lewis, earned a first round bye and will await her opponent from either Redlands or Whitman (Wash.) for her first match on Thursday afternoon. Lewis is currently ranked No. 2 in the Division III West Region with an overall record of 18-4. Chapman’s rookie pair, Fox and Lewis, will then face Stephanie Haldeman and Sheila Johnson of Grand Canyon in the Independent Colleges doubles bracket on Thursday afternoon. Friday will start the men’s competition as Panthers’ junior Clifford Yook earned the No. 4 seed in the Division III men’s singles bracket and a first round bye. Yook, who is 16-4 overall this season, will begin the Round of 32 on Friday afternoon. Junior Leland Buttle, who enters the tournament with an overall record of 8-9, faces a first round morning match against Pomona-Pitzer’s Cameron Taylor. Chapman’s doubles pair of Yook and Buttle, with an overall doubles record of 5-5, will take on the U.C. Santa Cruz’s doubles pair, Ilya Gendleman and Max Liberty-Point on Friday afternoon.
