FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PANTHERS COME UP EMPTY (TWICE) AGAINST SAN MARCOS

ORANGE, Calif. –  A Chapman University soccer doubleheader turned into a double-shutout as visiting Cal State San Marcos defeated the Panther men 3-0 and then the Cougar women followed with a 1-0 shutout of their own against Chapman at Wilson Field on Friday night.

In the men’s game, Cal State San Marcos (5-8) scored a pair of second half goals – including one with just nine players on the field – to pull away from the Panthers and hand Chapman just its second loss in its past six matches. The game-winning goal was scored on an ‘own goal’ by Cal State San Marcos in the 17th minute of play.

Meanwhile the game was tainted by an unusually high number of cautions – nine in all – resulting in the Cougars having to play the final 18 minutes down two men. Senior GK Josh Kaplan-Lyman made eight saves for Chapman (3-7-2).

Meanwhile, Cal State San Marcos’ Randi Leyva came off the bench to score the game-winner for the Cougars in the 77th minute of the women’s game, breaking a scoreless tie and snapping Chapman’s two-game winning streak. The Panthers fell to 1-3 in their past four matches at home, where they will play three of their final six games.

San Marcos (6-6-2) out-shot the Panthers 11-6 in the second half and kept junior GK Madison Coffin busy. Coffin made three of her four saves in the final 45 minutes for Chapman (6-6-2). San Marcos GK Jane Drury made four saves of her own to earn the shutout.
