CARRILLO WINS 100TH AS CHAPMAN SHUTS OUT OCCIDENTAL

ORANGE, Calif. –  The Chapman University men’s soccer team earned its first win of the season with a 3-0 decision over visiting Occidental College at Wilson Field on Friday night. The win was Panthers’ head coach Eddie Carrillo’s 100th career victory with Chapman. Carrillo, a 1990 graduate of Chapman, is the winningest men’s soccer coach in school history.

Sophomore F Alex Sewitz scored the Panthers’ first goal of the game in the sixth minute of play on a nice cross pass from senior MF Justin Shives off the right side. Shives started Chapman’s second goal later in the first half, this time feeding senior F Chris Marshall with a similar pass to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Three minutes into the second half, Sewitz scored his second goal of the game to finish the scoring for Chapman. Marshall and freshman D Jeff Levitt assisted on the play.

Carrillo is in his 12th season as head coach of Chapman’s men’s team and has an overall record of 100-93-13. He also coached the Panthers’ women’s team from 1996-99 and posted a 46-24-4 record.

The victory snapped Chapman’s three-game losing streak to begin the season and ended a stretch of four games in eight days. The Panthers will now get six days off before hosting perennial West Region powerhouse U.C. Santa Cruz on Sept. 14 at 7 p.m.
