BOKOSKY TIES WELCH FOR CHAPMAN’S ALL-TIME WINS RECORD

ORANGE, Calif. – Five players reached double figures in scoring as Chapman University’s men’s basketball team defeated visiting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges 84-62 at Hutton Center on Saturday night. The win gave Panthers’ coach Mike Bokosky his 258th career head coaching victory tying him with Ralph Welch for the school’s all-time wins mark.

Chapman (7-2) and Claremont were tied at 50 with 12:57 to play, when the Panthers went on a 17-4 run to regain a double-digit lead en route to their third consecutive win. Chapman never trailed for the second straight game and reached a season-high in points (84). The Panthers won their eighth straight game at Hutton Center and improved to 3-0 at home this season.

Sophomore G Kyle Wood led all scorers with 20 points, including a perfect 13-for-13 from the free throw line. Senior G Brandt Bangs scored 14 points, including four three-pointers to lead a cast of reserves that totaled 40 points for the Panthers off the bench. Freshman G Justin Riley added 11 points, six rebounds and four assists off the bench for Chapman.

For Claremont (4-3), Chris Blees scored a team-high 19 points and Craig Borengasser added 14 points. The Stags shot over 54 percent from the field, but just 52.6 percent from the free throw line.

Bokosky, 52, took over Chapman’s men’s basketball program in 1992 – his first and only head coaching job – and has suffered just one losing season. Under him, Chapman has enjoyed 14 consecutive winning seasons, including three year with 20 or more wins. Bokosky is in his 16th season and currently 258-129. He will try to break the record when the Panthers travel to Thousand Oaks to take on Cal Lutheran on Dec. 15 at 2:30 p.m.

Basketball is Chapman’s oldest program, beginning in 1920. Ralph Welch, who coached the Panthers from 1925-42, had held the school’s wins record for 65 years with a mark of 258-87 overall. Welch’s 18 years came to an end when the basketball program was suspended from 1942-45 due of World War II.
