FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men’s basketball team has had more than its fair share of close shaves in the first eight games this season. The Panthers had another one on Wednesday night and came out on top, defeating visiting University of La Verne 55-53 at Hutton Center. Chapman (6-2) has had five of its first eight games decided by three points or less and have a record of 3-2 in those games. In this one, the Panthers avenged a 59-56 loss to the Leopards in La Verne last month to split the season series. The Panthers never trailed in the game, in fact they led by as many as 13 points with 7:00 to play. But La Verne (3-2) went on a 13-0 run over the next 4 minutes to even the score at 53-53. The score remained tied until Chapman sophomore C Jared Kaiser was fouled with 2 seconds left. He sunk both free throws to clinch the victory for the Panthers. Sophomore G Kyle Wood led Chapman with 12 points, including a pair of three-pointers. Freshman G Justin Riley fell a rebound shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. The Leopards, who had a three-game winning streak snapped, were led by Kyle Luhnow (15 points) and Juan Canas (14 points).
