PANTHERS CLAIM THIRD PLACE AT LEE FULMER MEMORIAL
ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men’s basketball team defeated Pomona-Pitzer to capture third place at the Lee Fulmer Memorial Tournament hosted by Redlands on Saturday night at Ducey Gym. Chapman posted a 2-1 record in the tournament and improved to 5-2 overall.
Chapman 58, Cal State East Bay 45 (First Round) In first round action, the Panthers advanced led by sophomore C Jared Kaiser’s third career double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds). Chapman used a big first half to build a 20-point halftime lead and hung on in the second. Freshman G Justin Riley also had 12 points, seven rebounds and six blocked shots for the Panthers.
Redlands 58, Chapman 56 (Second Round) In a featuring 19 lead changes where neither team led by more than five points, tournament host Redlands edged the Panthers in the final 1:30 in the game. Bulldogs’ Dave Thomas scored a game-high 29 points and made some clutch free throws down the stretch to clinch a spot in the championship game for Redlands. Senior G Brandt Bangs led Chapman with 15 points, all coming off a career-high five three-pointers. The loss snapped Chapman’s three-game winning streak.
Chapman 66, Pomona-Pitzer 40 (Third-Place Game) The Panthers out-scored Pomona-Pitzer 35-11 in the second half to open up a two-point halftime lead. Chapman held the Sagehens to just 28 percent shooting in the game. Senior G Miguel Bennett led all scorers with 12 points and was named to the All-Tournament team. Bangs again came off the bench and added 11 points and three rebounds, including a trio of three-pointers.
