CHAPMAN WINS SEASON OPENER AT FREE THROW LINE

ORANGE, Calif. – Chapman University’s men’s basketball team picked a good night to shoot over 85 percent from the free throw line. The Panthers were 29-for-34 from the line and as a result, won their 2007-08 season opener by defeating visiting University of Redlands 64-55 at Hutton Center on Saturday night.

Chapman was sent to the line 30 times in the second half and made 25 of them en route to the win despite making just six field goals in the final 20 minutes of play.

Senior G Miguel Bennett led the way with 19 points, including 11-for-12 shooting from the charity stripe. Bennett also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds and had four steals for the Panthers. Chapman out-rebounded the Bulldogs 34-24. Sophomore G Kyle Wood added 15 points, including three three-pointers to aid Chapman (1-0).

The win was Panthers’ head coach Mike Bokosky’s 252nd career victory, just six shy of tying Ralph Welch as winningest basketball coach in school history.

Three players reached double-digits in points for Redlands (0-1): Patrick Coffey (14), Matt Loretz (12) and Justin Sobczyk (11). The game was Jim Ducey’s debut as men’s head coach for the Bulldogs.
