FOUR BASKETBALL PLAYERS HONORED BY DIVISION III INDEPENDENTS

ORANGE, Calif. – Four Chapman University basketball players have been recognized for their exceptional athletic performances on the court as they were named to the men’s and women’s All-Independent teams, as chosen by the Association of Division III Independents.

The Panthers’ leading scorer, Patrick Carney, was named to the All-Independent men’s team, marking the second consecutive year he has earned the honor. The junior guard made second team after averaging a team-high of 15.5 points and led Chapman with 41 three-pointers. Carney also ranked third on the team in assists (42).

Senior team captain Zach Wheatley was also honored on the second team for the second straight season. He finished the year averaging a team-high 5.9 rebounds and led the team in blocks (28). Wheatley also finished his career at Chapman with 1,044 points and 579 rebounds, the second player in Chapman’s Division III history to record over 1,000 points and 500 rebounds.

Sophomore point guard Jessica Kunisaki earned second team women’s honors after ranking eighth in Division III in assists per game. She also led her team in assists (172) and steals (77) and finished third with 9.5 points per game. Senior team captain Sarah Brands received third team honors as Chapman’s leading scorer (11.0 points per game), Brand also led the team in rebounds (5.3 per game) and blocks (21).

The Association of Division III Independents consists of 17 Division III independent institutions that have joined together to recognize student-athletes at independent institutions. The Association recognizes outstanding athletic achievements of its student-athletes on a weekly, monthly and annual basis.
