CHAPMAN MEN WIN BACK-TO-BACK INDEPENDENTS CHAMPIONSHIPS

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Panthers kept one streak alive and started another one on Saturday. The Chapman University men’s basketball team won its 13th consecutive game and made it two straight Division III Independents West Region championships with a 64-49 win over host Nebraska Wesleyan.

Chapman (21-5) also made it two years in a row with 20 or more victories. In fact, the Panthers haven’t won 21 games since the 1983-84 season when the then Division II Chapman team went 22-6.

The Panthers used a big defensive stand in the second half to break open a two-point halftime lead. Chapman limited the Prairie Wolves to just six field goals and 24 percent shooting in the final 20 minutes. Senior G Josh Flynn-Brown led all scorers with 24 points to raise his season average to 20.3 points per game. If Chapman is not selected into the NCAA Division III playoffs, Flynn-Brown would become the first Panther since Roger Middleton (1990-91) to average over 20 points per game in a season. Flynn-Brown was named to the All-Tournament team.

Senior G Patrick Carney reached 1,600 points for his career with 11 in the game and was named tournament MVP. Carney ranks third all-time in school history with 1,606 career points.

Junior G Miguel Bennett was just one rebound short of a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds for Chapman.
