FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men’s basketball team has rarely come up on the plus side versus NCAA Division II opponents over the years. Turns out the Panthers just needed a little home cooking. Chapman’s 69-67 upset victory over visiting Hawaii Pacific University at Hutton Center on Monday night gave the Panthers their ninth straight win of the season. After suffering through an 11-game losing streak against the higher division schools since 1994, all on the road, Chapman has now won consecutive home games against DII opponents, including a 90-84 overtime victory over U.C. San Diego last February. This was a back and forth game that saw 10 lead changes in the second half and the two teams were never separated by more than seven points – a lead Chapman held briefly in the first half. The Panthers took the lead for good on basket by freshman C Jared Kaiser with 34 seconds remaining and held on in the closing moments. Senior G Patrick Carney scored 14 of his 19 points in the second half to pace Chapman (17-5). Senior G Josh Flynn-Brown led all scorers with 22 points, including three three-pointers. Flynn-Brown last week became the 13th player in Chapman history to reach 1,000 points for his career and currently ranks 10th all-time in scoring with 1,079 points. For Hawaii Pacific (9-15), Rishi Kakad scored all of his team-best 15 points in the second half and added five assists in the loss. The Sea Warriors finished their West Coast trip 1-3. The Panthers improved to 7-2 at home this season and haven’t lost a game since Jan. 6 at Claremont. Chapman will play its final home game of the regular season on Tuesday night when it hosts West Coast Baptist at 7 p.m. The Panthers will hit the road for their final three games, including a defense of their DIII Independents West Region tournament championship Feb. 23-24 in Lincoln, Neb.
