ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men’s basketball team looked like turtles out of the starting blocks, but crossed the finish line looking like rabbits. Visiting U.C. Santa Cruz jumped out to a 16-1 lead in the first six minutes of the game, but the Panthers eventually caught and passed the Banana Slugs with a 78-57 win at Hutton Center on Friday night. Chapman (14-5) won its sixth straight game thanks to a big second half effort where it held Santa Cruz (4-16) to just 19 points. The Slugs led by four points at halftime, but the Panthers eventually took the lead for good with 12:34 to go in the game and out-scored their opponents 31-10 from that point on. Senior G Josh Flynn-Brown scored 28 points for Chapman in the win, including four three-pointers. Junior G Ramon Mendoza and freshman C Jared Kaiser also reached double-digits in scoring with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Freshman G Dan Aguilar had a big night off the bench with six points, four steals and a game-high 10 rebounds. Senior G Patrick Carney scored seven points in the game and became just the fifth player in Chapman history to reach 1,500 points for his career. Carney is currently ranks No. 5 all-time at Chapman with 1,506 points. Eric Butler (1979-82) is fourth on the scoring list with 1,553 points. Murphy Holmes led the Slugs with 17 points, including three three-pointers. The Panthers have won eight of their past 10 games and improved to 5-2 at home this season.
