ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men’s basketball team shot 63 percent from the field and had four starters reach double-digits in points on Thursday night. All that and it was still just enough to defeat visiting U.C. Santa Cruz 72-69 at Hutton Center for the Panthers’ seventh consecutive victory. The Banana Slugs rallied from a 15-point second half deficit to even the score at 61 with 5:30 to play. However, Chapman G Miguel Bennett’s basket with just over two minutes to play put the Panthers ahead for good and improved the team’s home mark to 9-1 this season. Bennett finished with 15 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Sophomore G Kyle Wood led all scorers with 17 points for Chapman (15-6), including three three-pointers. Freshman G Griffin Ramme (16 points) and sophomore G Dan Aguilar (10 points) completed a quartet of Panthers earning double figures in points. U.C. Santa Cruz (2-19) forced 24 turnovers by the Panthers but couldn’t keep from dropping its 17th straight game this season. G John Buck led the Slugs with 12 points in defeat.
