FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men’s basketball team built a double-digit lead over Division II foe U.C. San Diego, lost the lead and fell behind in the second half, and then came back to force overtime where the Panthers never trailed on their way to a 70-64 win over the visiting Tritons at Hutton Center on Tuesday night. After a midseason six-game losing streak, Chapman has now won seven of its past eight games and clinched a winning record for the 13th consecutive season. Chapman (15-7) capitalized on poor shooting by U.C. San Diego (8-11) in the first half, building a 15-point lead and taking a 34-21 advantage into the half. But the Tritons improved in the second half, shooting three times better (21.7 percent in the first half, 60 percent in the second) and eventually took over the lead by five points late in the game. While San Diego made just 1-of-8 three-pointers before halftime, they made 4-of-5 in the second. But clutch shooting by senior guard Greg Perrine (22 points, three three-pointers) and junior guard Patrick Carney (16 points) kept the Panthers close and put them back in the lead with under a minute in regulation. San Diego’s Clint Allard scored two of his 10 points with 0:29 remaining to knot the score at 58-58 and force overtime. In overtime it was more Perrine and Carney and all Chapman. The Panthers scored the first six points of the extra period and held on to beat the Tritons for the first time since 1997, a string of five losses, including a three-point defeat in La Jolla in 2004. With his 16 points, Carney surpassed the 1,100 point mark, becoming just the second Division III player in Chapman history to accomplish the feat. He currently ranks eighth all-time in school history with 1,111 career points.
