FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ORANGE, Calif. – Chapman University’s men’s basketball team played maybe its best 10 minutes of hoops this season with a strong second half showing, on its way to an 80-58 win over visiting U.C. Santa Cruz at Hutton Sports Center on Friday night. It was the Panthers’ second win in three games over the Banana Slugs this season. A five-point Chapman (14-7) lead at halftime gradually disappeared when the Panthers missed their first six field goal attempts and didn’t score a basket for the first nine minutes of the second half. The Banana Slugs cut the lead to one when Jon Mercado made one of his four three-pointers in the game, making the score 50-49 Chapman with 11:53 remaining in the game. Then the Panthers caught fire. Chapman outscored Santa Cruz 30-9 – and shot over 82 percent (14-of-17) from the field – over the final 11 minutes, winning handily by 22 points. Junior guard Patrick Carney scored 10 of his 18 points in the second half, all during Chapman’s late run. Five Panthers reached double figures in scoring, including senior guard Greg Perrine (15 points) and a double-double from senior guard Zach Wheatley (13 points, 11 rebounds). Chapman out-rebounded U.C. Santa Cruz 43-23 for the game. Mercado finished with 16 points to lead Santa Cruz (4-15).
